How to combat those wedding nerves - night before routine

Whilst planning and organising your wedding is one of the most wonderful events of your life, it can also bring times of anxiety. Make sure to prepare yourself mentally and physically for the big day to ensure that everything runs smoothly. The day before the wedding can sometimes be busy and chaotic but making sure to have a routine for the evening and ultimately a good night’s sleep is key. Here are a few top tips from us on how to achieve this.

#1 - Eat sensibly

Sounds obvious but try and avoid spicy or heavily fragranced meals the day before the wedding. Waking up smelling of garlic or overpowering smells from lingering food will not make you start the day the right way.

Make sure the food you are eating is light and therefore doesn’t sit on your stomach heavily causing disrupted sleep, particularly if you are eating late into the evening. Try and plan in advance for what you will do with food for the day before the wedding to avoid that last minute rush to the take away!

#2 Do you need that extra coffee?

Coffee, tea or any other caffeinated drinks should be avoided where possible in order to achieve maximum relaxation. Whilst removing caffeine completely is not wise if you are used to consuming a lot during the day, it would be worth making a note of not “overdoing” it the day before the wedding. Limit the amount you consume during the day and then set a time limit for your last beverage, making sure that during the late afternoon/evening you avoid caffeine in order to maximise your sleep opportunity.

#3 Evening exercise

If you are are a regular gym attendee, this will be an easy one for you as you will understand the benefits to the body in taking part in exercise. Book in your exercise/gym session with plenty of thought to the timings of the day. Also be mindful of eating times and how you will incorporate this before/after exercising.

Even if exercise isn’t part of your daily routine, give some thought to spending 30 mins stretching or doing yoga. Exercise increases your metabolism and can help decrease stress and anxiety.

#4 Put the phone down

This is good practice at any point but particularly the night before the big day. Looking at your phone increases mental stimulation and therefore isn’t conducive to a restful night’s sleep. If you struggle to get off to sleep to start with, pick up a book and read in order to relax until you feel ready to drift off.

It’s an exciting time so probable that you will wake during the night, if you do - DON”T pick up your phone! Avoid the stimulation, pick the book back up and relax.
